Campfire Cooking In The Great Outdoors
The first meal of the day is breakfast and there’s nothing nicer than the smell of bacon and eggs cooking in a skillet, on top of a cooking plate, on the campfire or if you have one, a gas burner. You can even use the lid of your Dutch Oven, which is very versatile cooking pot.
Once breakfast is out of the way, a great idea is to prepare your evening meal in a Dutch Oven. Dutch Ovens are slow cookers, which means that you can prepare a meal in the morning and let it simmer all day. Put in a whole leg of lamb and cover it with vegetables and herbs for a very satisfying and hearty meal.
The pot is made from cast iron and is very heavy, has sloping sides, three legs to stand on, and comes with a lid which has a rim to hold the hot coals. The idea is that once you have prepared your meal and the pot is ready, cover the whole thing with hot coals or hang it over the fire for slow, even heat.
Having spent the whole day fishing, playing games with your kids, or even relaxing with a good book, being outdoors sure does make you hungry! Don’t forget that the delicious smells coming from your campfire are your evening meal already cooked and ready to serve.
When you remove the meat and vegetables from the pot, you will find that the meat will literally fall apart, and the vegetables will be cooked to perfection. What a no fuss, easy way to prepare a meal! The best part is that you only have the one cooking pot to wash up and that means more time to relax.
After your dinner, why not toast marshmallows over the open fire? This is a great dessert and is a perfect way to a sumptuous, satisfying meal.
