Books and Games for Little Campers

Many parents are asking me what books are suitable for little campers. We all know that such books can be a great camping companion but also they can be a great introduction to camping for the little kids. So I compiled a list of all time favourites especailly for you. I am sure that your child will find something interesting on this list just for him or her. 

Childrens' Books:

The Lorax (Classic Seuss) (ages 4-8)
This is an environmental classic, which explains in simple words an importance of conservation. Your child will have fun, as with all Dr.Seuss books, and learn an important message of saving the planet.

S Is for S'mores: A Camping Alphabet (Alphabet Books) by Helen Foster (ages 4-8)

This book explores A-Z of camping. 

Kids Camp!: Activities for the Backyard or Wilderness (A Kid's Guide series)by Laurie Carlson  (ages 4-8)

This is a wonderful guide for inexperienced campers and their families. It contains a little bit of everything: advice, games and recipes.

Camping With the Presidentby Ginger Wadsworth (ages 9-12)

This is a story of President Roosevelt going on a camping trip to Yosemite Park. The book is fun and serious at the same time. It stesses the need for protection of nature and wildlife.

Some books intoduce favourite characters to camping:

Just Camping Out (Look-Look) by Mercer Mayer (ages 4-)

In this book critter spends a part of the night in the tent set-up in his back yard. As little kids may be afraid of the dark outside, this is a good story for them.

Curious George Goes Camping Book & CD (Read Along Book & CD) by H. A. Rey (ages 4-8)

Curious george is very excited about going camping with the Man with the yellow hat, but as usuall gets into trouble and then saves the day. 

Arthur's Camp-Out (I Can Read Book 2) by Lillian Hoban (ages 4-8)

In this cute book Arhtur takes his sister on a field trip and it turns out that girls are not afraid of anything.

Dora's Camping Trip (Dora the Explorer) by Wendy Wax (ages bay-preschool)

Dora and Boots go camping. I wish I had this book when Mark was little, he loved Dora.

Caillou: Goes Camping (Lift-the-Flap Book) by Roger Harvey (ages baby-preschool)

Calliou goes backyard camping with his grandpa. This book answers questions and addresses fears of camping for little kids.

Kids Campfire Book, The: Official Book of Campfire Fun (Family Fun) by Jane Drake (grade 4-6)

This is a comprehensive camping guide for young readers. There is something for everyone, novice and experienced alike. Special attention is paid to safety, which will keep parents happy as well.

Cooking On A Stick: Campfire Recipes for Kids (Acitvities for Kids) by Linda White (ages 7-11)

All about cooking without using pots and pans. Covers easy recipes and snack preparation for kids.

The Table Where Rich People Sit (Aladdin Picture Books)by Byrd Baylor (ages 6-9) 

Although this is not exactly a camping story, this book talks about appreciation of nature and the outdoors, as opposed to material possessions. Good, thought provoking tale with a moral.

Who Pooped in the Park? Yellowstone National Park by Gary D. Robson (ages 4-8)

This delightful book teaches kids about animals living in the Yellowstone National Park. Your child will learn to recognize their footprints and other signs of their presence, such as poop. Cannot get funnier than this.


Amelia Bedelia Goes Camping (I Can Read Book 2)by Peggy Parish (ages 4-8)

Funny story about the housekeeper Amelia Bedelia going camping for the first time. This is a hilarious story. My son Mark, 8, was laughing his head off and wanted me to read it again and again. Amelia has no idea what to do and the kids learn what it means to pitch a tent and many other expresssions.
