First Canoe Trip

This was the first canoe trip of my son’s life. It only took about 2 hours, but for a six-year old it seemed almost like an overseas journey.

We started at the beach at Red Bay and paddled along the shore towards the eastern end of the bay. Along the way we could admire all the cottages on the shores, the fragmented beaches, and rocky shores. We were not very far from the shore at all times and so we could see the bottom of the sandy bay. We passed some families with kids frolicking in the water. They waved to us and we waved back.

My son Mark proclaimed himself the captain of the ship and so he was telling us where to go. As we mates were paddling along he was catching fish for dinner, with a string attached to a stick, as any good captain has to feed his crew. After we were about half way through, our captain decided he had enough and wanted to go back. Unfortunately his un-subordinate crew rebelled and paddled along happily in the same direction Canoe Trip on Red Bayas before.

Finally we landed on the rocky tip of this “Cape Cod” and got out of the canoe. For the first time we could see what was hidden behind this point. It was another bay just like ours, and from the distance we could recognize a resort that was situated at its shores. Now our exploration was complete and we could return. Captain ordered full ahead and so we quickly and safely returned to our beach, as the winds were now pushing us in that direction.

Our captain was very proud of his big accomplishment. Ahoy!
