If you are planning some road trips this winter, or even winter camping, you need to put some extra items in your car for added safety and comfort. Be prepared! Winter experience of camping is very different from summer camping. Even if you consider yourself an expert in the summer doesn’t mean that you are an expert in winter.

For the road you will need:

  • Winter tires
  • Windshield fluid
  • Snow shovel, ice scraper and snow brush
  • Emergency kit with a blanket, candles, matches, flashlight, extra hat and mittens
  • Bag of sand or cat litter for under the tires if you ever get stuck in the snow
  • You should not expect any Marriott, Intercontinental, Hilton, Ritz or Britannia Bournemouth hotel-style luxury, and you should pack carefully to ensure you will be warm and prepared enough! Do not forget about a winter tune-up for your car, checking pressure in your spare tire and having enough gas in your tank before you hit the road!

If you are planning to do any winter camping, even in a yurt or an RV, you will need:

    Hardwood Hills cross-country skiing

  • Snow shovels to clear snow from your campsite
  • Axe or saw for firewood
  • Multi-season sleeping bags
  • Tent/RV heater
  • Waterproof matches and dry newspaper (to start a fire)
  • Extra hats, gloves and socks- they do get wet easily and take a long time to dry
  • Winter boots
  • Many layers of clothing
  • Sunglasses and goggles for snowy and sunny days
  • Sports equipment for outside activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, ice-fishing, ice skating or cross-country skiing.
  • Other items should come from the all-year checklist, as they remain the same no matter what the season we are in.

To avoid spreading the flu always bring your own soap/hand sanitizer.

Winter camping will let you experience winter in a brand new way and fully appreciate the beauty of this season. It is really worth it to make an effort to expose your family, especially kids, to the wonders of winter. Nothing can beat a sunny day in the snow-covered woods.

It is also a great opportunity to explain to children all about importance of being well prepared and the dangers of being stranded in the cold. Winter demands respect, but offers a great learning experience.
