Car Seat Safety

Car seats are paramount to our children’s safety in a car while we are driving, yet majority of them are not installed correctly.

Needles to say this can be very dangerous and some care should be taken to re-check the car seats in your vehicle as the new year or new season starts.

So the first thing to do is to dig up that manual that came with the car seat.  Review if the seat is still appropriate for the size and age of your child.

Second, check manufacturer’s directions on proper installation. Then also check your car’s manual on the subject and see what is appropriate: using a seat belt or a latch system.
This is very important! Newer vehicles all have an additional strap to be used with a car seat, while the older ones still use the seat belt system.

Take time to check the car seat for any signs of damage, wear and tear or expiration date. Damaged or older car seats should be replaced, as their safety may be compromised.

And remember that you should never purchase a used car seat, since it may have been damaged in a collision without any visible signs. Only buying a new car seat is acceptable . Also check for recalls on your type of car seat.

As always remember: better safe than sorry! So drive safely!

PS. It would be ideal to see a Child Passenger Safety Technician or a trained police officer to check if your child’s car seat has been placed correctly.  Check http://www.seatcheck.org/ for inspectors near you.
