How Do You Go to the Washroom When Camping?

One of the deterrents when it comes to camping is: how in the world a person can go to the bathroom?

The first thought is that there may not be any bathroom facilities at the campground at all, or at least not in close proximity. If you’re not camping at a campground, then you can expect to do your business the same way your ancestors once did…find a spot on the ground and go for it.

Out HouseSo how do you survive when nature calls while you are camping?

If you’re not camping in a national park area where there are outhouse facilities, you’re going to have to go about things the very old fashioned way. You’re basically going to have to be like a cat.

What you need to do is dig a hole about 8 inches deep. If there are quite a few of you, you may need to go as far as 12 inches deep. The idea is that each time someone does their business, they take some dirt and cover it up. This keeps anyone from stepping in your toilet area and also keeps odors at bay.

You can make your cat hole as big around as you want. You can make it a rather elaborate place to do your business. Just make sure it is out of sight of everyone else so that you can do your business in private. There is nothing more embarrassing than everyone sitting and watching you as you use the cat hole.

Lastly, make sure you pack some toilet paper. You don’t want to reach for a leaf and find out that it is something poisonous. That could result in a rather miserable situation and one that may require medical attention if it is severe.

But if your stay is a short one, you may want to go in some newspaper, wrap it up, and place it in a plastic bag until you can dispose of it properly. Creating a cat hole is mainly for those who will be staying a little while longer.

But if you really hate those capmsites without a toilet why not bring your own: Thetford 25112 Porta Potti 365 White/Dove Brown Level Gauge and Lid Latch with Piston Pump Flush is a great choice and gets very good consumer ratings.
