Warding off Bugs While You’re Camping

One of the hazards of camping is the bugs. They will bite at you and irritate you to no end. What happens is you find yourself swatting more than anything else. Fortunately, there are some remedies out there to keep the bugs away. Those remedies include:

• Skin repellant – There are many effective natural products out there that you simply spray on your skin. This makes you less appetizing to bugs. Make sure you reapply if you get wet or it has been a while after the first application.

• Tiki torches – There are also tiki torches that you can place citronella in to keep bugs away. You simply surround your camping area with them and they create a smoke/smell barrier.

• Citronella products – Other citronella products include candles and you can have straight up citronella oil sitting out. Bugs hate this stuff. They will fly away from it. If you keep it around you, they will not even want to go near you.

• Nets – This may be something you decide not to do, but it is an option if bugs are bad. You can invest in mosquito nets, which create a barrier between you and them. These are very effective, but do require extra work for you. There are net hats and net jackets available, but net tents (aka screen houses) are the best.

• Wear light colored clothing – Bugs, especially mosquitoes, hate light clothing. They are attracted to dark clothing.

• Keep the perfumes at home – Perfume can also attract bugs. You want to leave scented cosmetics at home so that you are not becoming bug food.

You don’t have to become a bug’s next meal. You can ward them off. When warding them off successfully, the campers in the next camping area had better good deterrents in place or all of the bugs will flock their way.

Just exercise some common sense and invest in the above, which are rather affordable and worth keeping the bugs off of your family.

Bug Repellants

Just like Julie, I am not a big fan of DEET, the most widely used ingridient in bug repellants and known neurotoxin. I had good results with all the other strategies mentioned above without the use of DEET. DEET, although deemed safe for older kids, is not recommended for the really young ones. I just think that the longer you can go without it the better. Check the ingridients on your bug spray before you use it on your kids.
