Booger Bears 101: Simple Tips for Making the Woods Less Scary
I remember when my friend Karen took her youngest son camping for the first time. I wasn't there, but I remember so well because it went so badly. The day, well, the day was fun. The day brought fishing trips with his Daddy, flower hunting with his mommy and even scavenger hunting with his big sister . . . but nighttime, now that was a horse of a different color.
The first night ended in the rustle of a few leaves against the tent and little Trent's insistent wailing stating "Oh, my goodness! It's a three headed bear!" Yep. Isn't this the story with far too many of our trips? Daytime brings laughter and frolics in the creek and night time brings "Oh, my God what were we thinking?"
If you have a little worrier tagging along for your next camping trip . . . or if you are just a bit jumpy yourself, here are a few simple tips for making the woods less scary and a lot easier to manage.
Push On, Push Off - "The Pusher"
Ok. It's not as catchy as The Clapper . . . and alright, it's not really called The Pusher either - but those little hallway illuminating lights are a wonderful take along for dark nights. These circular lights are very inexpensive and easily found in the home improvement department, usually right alongside nightlights and light bulbs. They are battery operated which means they are perfectly portable and a simple push gives off just enough light to illuminate the bedside of your favorite little sweetie.
Weather Radios and Portable TV's
While you may be looking for an escape from modern technology, it can never hurt to have a little weather radio or portable TV to carry along on your trip. If a sudden downpour leaves your child quivering, a weather radio may ease his mind. If a storm is particularly loud, a portable TV or radio may drown out the sound of the thunder.
Comforts of Home
Camping often means packing light, but there should always be room for a few comforts of home. New and strange places can be scarier than the dark alone but a few familiar items can make your tent or camper a little homier. A blanket, favorite teddy or storybook are among the favorite picks of little ones everywhere.
A Plan B
When all else fails, be prepared to cut the trip short if you have to. I always like to go into things with the thought of having to leave early. If this happens to you, don't get discouraged. Simply finish your trip in your own backyard. This is where some of the best memories are made!
