Snowshoeing

Do you feel stuck inside during winter months?

You don’t need to be. Perhaps winter camping is not everyone’s favourite winter activity, but there are many outdoor activities you can still enjoy with your whole family. Besides the tobogganing and skiing, snowshoeing is quickly becoming a favourite of many families. All you need is four inches of snow and snowshoes.

You can snowshoe in a city park or a cross-country trail (but not on tracks!). It feels a little bit like floating on the snow and dragging your feet on the surface. It is quite easy, but offers good workout at the same time. All kids over 5 can do iSnowshoeing with the Kidst.

Snowshoes are available at sports goods stores such as Mountains Plus, but many lodges, resorts and conservation areas offer rentals, so find out in advance.

Traditional snowshoes were made out of wood and look a bit like tennis rackets. Modern models can be made of plastic or metal and are usually lightweight. Women’s shoes are narrower that men’s as are the athletic shoes for runners, while backpackers wear larger versions for an added weight. When you pick your snowshoes you get them according to your weight, but remember to add 10 extra pounds for your winter outfit just to be on the safe side.

Dress warmly and remember to bring water and snacks for the kids to enjoy along the trail.
