Avoiding Motion Sickness on That Road Trip

Unfortunately, many of us suffer from motion sickness. This is because what the eyes see and what the brain processes end up being two different things. The fixed objects in the car give the illusion that you’re sitting still when you’re really not. What this does is cause you or your children to get some rather sick feelings. Those sick feelings can then lead to a mess in your car. That is definitely not the way to start a getaway.

If you want to avoid motion sickness in both kids and adults, here are some ways to do it without having to reach for the Dramamine. That’s unless you’re a huge fan of Dramamine:

  • Watch the road in front of you. If you focus on the road and not on the fact that everything in the car is holding still, your brain says, “I feel like I’m moving…Oh, I am moving.”
  •

  •  Don’t read or play video games. This confuses the brain even more. There is a different type of motion happening in a video game. When reading, you’re again looking at an object that is holding still although you’re in motion in some way.
  •

  • Don’t move your head around too much. Moving the head around too much just causes even more chaos for the brain to process.
  • Kids can have toys that help them pretend that they are driving. This allows them to move in sync with the car. This is why someone who gets motion sickness can drive without a hitch, but they can’t be a very good passenger.
  •

  • Keep clothes loose and make sure the car’s interior is cool. A hot car can magnify the degree of motion sickness.
  •

  • Having an empty stomach can make nausea worse. If you’ve ever had that nauseous feeling when your stomach is empty, imagine that being magnified about five times.

And if none of this works, you do have Dramamine, but the idea is to not have to take any medications to help your motion sickness. You want to be alert during your trip.
