One of the most enjoyable things about a camping trip is Story Hour!

Sitting around the campfire at night, with everyone well fed and pleasantly tired, is a favorite time of the day for just about everyone during a camping trip.

The dancing, flickering campfire flames….the eerie whoo-whoo-whoo-ing of an owl….the songs of crickets and bullfrogs….the dark, velvety night with a canopy of brilliant stars overhead…..it’s all just wonderful and so very conducive to settling in to hear a thrilling story.

And, let’s be honest here---not just any old story will suffice for a campfire story.

No, a campfire story shouldn’t be some humdrum, run-of-the-mill little story.

A campfire story should be SCARY!

A good campfire story needs to be scary, creepy, and told by someone who knows how to tell a tale in such a way that it adds the right amount of spookiness!

Most camping families have their old favorite, tried-and-true spooky campfire stories that have been told and retold, and stood the test of time.

A really good campfire story can be shared on a hundred camping trips and never lose its edge of suspense!

If you don’t already have a favorite campfire story, go to the library and look around for a book with the type of stories you want.

Or, Google “Campfire Stories” and you’ll find plenty of results, with some great stories for all age groups.

When camping with very young children, be careful not to overdo the scariness level.

There are a lot of campfire stories that can guarantee goosebumps without keeping the kiddies awake all night or causing them to have bad dreams.

So, get some good campfire stories ready for your next camping trip and start your own tradition!
