125 Years of Camping at YMCA

Can you believe it? Camping at the Y started officially in 1885 with a week-long camping trip to Orange lake NY. First camping trips were for small groups only, with a few tents set up along the shores of a lake. As camping became more and more popular leaders of the Y started the American Camping Association (1910).

Nowadays over 800,000 kids and adults participate in YMCA's resident and day camps every summer. Even twice as many participate in other camp-related programs. These are very large numbers and I am sure that most of us or our kids participated in some YMCA programs over the years.

To celebrate the 125th anniversary, Y's across USA will hold a nationwide campfire event on July 14, 2010.
