Camping with Babies and Toddlers

We always went for a camping trip every summer with my step children before the younger ones were born. However, when the babies arrived, we were wondering if it was possible to do the same during those summers. Would it be too cold, or too hot, or too crowded for a baby, then for a baby and a toddler? What about nap times? Would they be eaten alive by mosquitoes? Questions, questions, questions…

As it turned out, many of the provincial parks have yurts on their grounds, which is a very comfortable tent with a stove and bunk-beds for six. The baby was sleeping with me and we took a playpen for the toddler.  The baby was fully nursed, the toddler eat the same than the rest of us. The older kids got some special time with dad in the canoe while the toddler got his nap. The baby was carried around in a sling everywhere; we went for hikes as usual.

Beforehand, we were worried about potential tantrums and screaming, none of which took place. The kids loved the outdoors, the water, the woods, the beach, the fire, the starry nights, and the constant closeness. Nobody needed to cry for attention and to chase away boredom, which is the worst enemy of children!

I totally agree!

I was also scared of camping when my son was born, but I find it that so many people camp sucessfully with babies and toddlers. In general all kids love camping and there is nothing to be afraid of!
